Yes it is still frightfully early in the 2007 football season, but only two teams are being talked about as City Championship title contenders: Birmingham and Venice.

However, Dorsey has just entered the conversation in a big way after knocking off No. 14 Santa Margarita, 12-7, on Friday at home.

Dorsey and Birmingham each have something Venice doesn’t -- a signature intersectional victory over a ranked Southern Section team. Venice will get its opportunity in two weeks when the Gondoliers travel to Oaks Christian.

‘We told our guys that tonight was our opportunity,’ Dons Coach Paul Knox said. ‘And these are the type of games you come to Dorsey to play. They were ranked and we knew they were a good football team. But we knew we had an opportunity here to make some noise for ourselves.

‘We’ve been under the radar, and nobody’s said a word about us. And we told the kids, ‘If you want to be mentioned in a championship run, here was an opportunity to step forward.’’

The Dons (2-1), who are idle next week, should expect and should get some top 25 votes this weekend. Their defense was suffocating, recording seven sacks of Brett Mason. Dorsey was also patient and disciplined enough on offense to play a grind-it-out game against the Eagles, who are used to facing relentless rushing attacks by the likes of Mater Dei and Servite in the physical Trinity League.

Dorsey will host Birmingham in two weeks in what some might now call a championship game preview, but it’s really too early to call. But with the Dons’ victory Friday, that showdown game becomes a lot more intriguing.
