NEW DELHI — A French ballet troupe led by Rudolf Nureyev narrowly escaped serious injury when a bus carrying them to the Taj Mahal was involved in an accident Wednesday, police said.
They said a truck loaded with fish crashed into the rear of the bus, which was carrying 20 members of the Paris Opera Ballet on its way to the northern town of Agra.
Five dancers suffered minor cuts and bruises in the collision, which occurred about 30 miles from New Delhi.
Villagers from hamlets along the road rallied around the stranded troupe as it waited for another bus. Northern India is currently suffering from a cold wave, and the villagers lit bonfires to warm their unexpected guests, police said.
The Paris Opera Ballet, with the 46-year-old Nureyev participating, gave two performances in the Indian capital on Monday and Tuesday.
