A Solidarity activist’s 6-year-old son must wait for life-saving partial heart transplant surgery at Stanford University until a Polish assistance group raises $25,000. Polish Assistance of California has set up an account for Piotor Sternik at California Canadian Bank in San Mateo. Doctors at Stanford will forgo their fees, but the Medical Center is requiring that the $25,000 be guaranteed before it will search for a donor and admit Piotor. Hospital spokesman Mike Goodkind said that while the boy would eventually die of the condition, which he described as blue baby syndrome, the case is not yet an emergency. He said the family was aware that payment would be necessary before the mother and son flew to San Francisco.
