Is Atheism at Root of All Our Troubles?

The Pope stated that atheists are responsible for world hunger, nuclear war, and all other evils.
I am an atheist and I resent that statement. I am an atheist because I am unable to place any credence in an omnipotent god who allows such evils or in his earthly representative whose opposition to birth control contributes substantially to world hunger and population pressures that lead to war.
