A probation revocation hearing was set Tuesday for Feb. 1 for a mentally retarded man convicted of setting fire to the United Methodist Church in San Marcos. According to court documents, Donald Lee Jackson, 31, of San Diego, has violated conditions of his probation by begging for money at two San Diego churches. When San Diego Superior Court Judge Kenneth Johns placed Jackson on three years’ probation on Oct. 11, he ordered him not to frequent churches except to attend services. Jackson was suspected of setting five church fires, but most charges were dismissed for insufficient evidence. When he entered his no-contest plea to the May 7 fire in San Marcos, which caused $175,000 in damage, Jackson was also charged with setting a fire at the United Methodist Church in Vista on the same day. The Vista fire caused $80,000 in damage. Jackson, who has served 154 days in County Jail, could be sentenced to 26 more days.
