Ex-Sen. Williams Denied Parole

WASHINGTON — A parole board turned down a bid for freedom today by former Sen. Harrison Williams (D-N.J.), serving a three-year term at Allenwood Federal Prison for bribery in the Abscam case, the Justice Department said.
Parole was denied because of “the seriousness of the offense and the violation of the public trust by an official holding a public position,” a department spokesman said. Williams, whose term ends May 11, 1986, has 30 days to appeal the board’s decision.
