Soviet Skater Wins Gold Medal; Californian 3rd

TOKYO — Alexander Fadeev’s powerful performance in the men’s final today won the Soviet Union its second gold medal at the 1985 World Skating Championships.
Brian Boitano of Sunnyvale, Calif., who skates a strong program of triple jumps to music from James Bond movies, won the bronze behind second-place finisher Brian Orser of Canada.
In the women’s competition, East Germany’s Katarina Witt, the 1984 Olympic gold medalist, won the short program today but remained third overall.
Tiffany Chin, 17, of Toluca Lake, Calif., remained in second place after the short program, displaying sprightly footwork to Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.”
Kira Ivanova of the Soviet Union, first after compulsory figures, held on to the top spot although she finished third in the short program.
