St. John’s Mullin Tops Ewing for Wooden Award

Chris Mullin of St. John’s was named winner of the ninth annual John Wooden Award Sunday as the outstanding college basketball player in the country.
Mullin won by 60 votes over Patrick Ewing of Georgetown in the balloting of more than 1,000 sportscasters and sportswriters across the country. Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma was third.
Coach Dean Smith of North Carolina made the announcement of Mullin as the winner at halftime of the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game between his Tar Heels and Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Wooden couldn’t make the trip East because of illness of his wife, Nell.
Mullin will be honored at a banquet at the Los Angeles Athletic Club April 3, and a $2,000 scholarship donation will be made to St. John’s by the LAAC.
Past winners were Marques Johnson (UCLA); Phil Ford (North Carolina); Butch Lee (Marquette); Darrell Griffith (Louisville); Larry Bird (Indiana State); Ralph Sampson (Virginia), twice; Michael Jordan (North Carolina).
