Tennis Roundup : Davis Cup: U.S. Sweeps Past Japan

The United States Davis Cup team completed a 5-0 sweep of Japan Sunday at Kyoto, Japan, as Eliot Teltscher and 17-year-old Aaron Krickstein won their singles matches.

Krickstein, who made his Davis Cup debut Friday, defeated Kaoru Maruyama, 6-1, 6-1, in 46 minutes, and Teltscher defeated Shuzo Shiraishi, 6-3, 6-2.

The United States next faces West Germany in a second-round meeting in the World Group Davis Cup competition Aug. 9-11 in Germany.

The West Germans, with a promising young team, defeated Spain, 3-2, at Sindelfingen, West Germany. Spain, eliminated following Saturday’s doubles, won both singles matches Sunday as Sergio Casal defeated Boris Becker, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, and Juan Aguilera beat Michael Westphal, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Becker and Andreas Maurer had given West Germany an unbeatable 3-0 lead Saturday with a 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sergio Casals and Emilio Sanchez.

Miloslav Mecir defeated Alexander Zverev in four sets to clinch Czechoslovakia’s victory over the Soviet Union a World Group Davis Cup match at Tblisi in the Soviet Union.

The 6-3, 8-6, 0-6, 8-6 victory gave Czechoslovakia an insurmountable 3-1 lead. The Czechs played without Ivan Lendl, who has an inner ear infection.

Vijay Amritraj rallied to defeat Francesco Cancellotti, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 8-6 at Calcutta, lifting India to a 3-2 victory over Italy in a World Group Davis Cup match.

Amritraj, India’s veteran Davis Cup captain, served 24 aces while giving India an insurmountable 3-1 lead. Cancellotti had 21 aces, but also served up 20 double-faults.

Pat Cash routed Marko Ostoja, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, to clinch a 3-2 victory for Australia over Yugoslavia in a Davis Cup World Group match at Split, Yugoslavia.
