Wheatley Gets No-Hitter as Pomona Wins

Rhonda Wheatley pitched a no-hitter and struck out 14 to lead Cal Poly Pomona to a 1-0 win over Oklahoma in nine innings Friday night in a second-round game of the PONY Invitational Softball Tournament at Cal State Fullerton.
The two-time defending tournament champion Broncos (21-5) won the game when Allison Stoell, who had led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and went to second base on an infield out, scored on an error by Sooner left fielder Carrie Watkins.
Earlier in the day in a first-round game, Pomona beat Arizona, 8-0. Wheatley (18-5) went the first five innings to get the win and also hit a home run in the Broncos’ six-run second inning. Candi Burke keyed the inning with a grand slam.
Cal State Fullerton (22-3), the tournament’s top-seeded team, beat Cal, 4-3, in a first-round game. The Bears made three errors that led to four unearned runs by the Titans.
In other PONY Invitational first-round games: Northwestern 3, United States International 2; Pacific 2, Long Beach 1; Oklahoma 3, Utah 0; Nebraska 1, San Diego State 0; Fresno State 4, Arizona State 0, and Utah State 5, University of San Francisco 1.
In other second-round games:
Fullerton beat Utah State, 4-2 and Nebraska defeated Fresno State, 2-0, in nine innings.
In community college softball action:
Santa Ana 2, Mt. San Antonio 1--Chris Makimoto struck out four and allowed three hits to lead the Dons past Mt. San Antonio at Santa Ana.
Makimoto improved her record to 8-0 and has given up only one earned run in 55 innings this season. Sam Arledge led the Dons’ offense by going 3 for 3 with two runs scored, and Alani Silva was 2 for 3 with a double, triple and two RBIs.
Santa Ana improved its SCC record to 2-1 and overall record to 17-1. Mt. San Antonio is 0-4 and 7-10.
Fullerton 5, Cypress 3--The first-place Hornets (4-0 in conference and 15-2 overall) scored three times in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead and went on to win at Fullerton. Lisa Boehnke drove in one of the runs with a single and the other two scored as a result of Cypress errors. Lisa Frezquez was the winning pitcher, and Roxanne Arden was the loser.
