MICROWORLDS: WRITINGS ON SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY by Stanislaw Lem, edited by Franz Rottensteiner (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich: $14.95). Ten of the Polish science-fiction writer’s essays, published in magazines ranging from obscure fanzines to the New Yorker, are brought together in this good introduction to Lem’s nonfiction and his critical ideas on the current state of science fiction and fantasy. Lem is worth becoming familiar with, as he is one of the most vital voices in the world of science fiction today.
