STUTTGART, West Germany — Five people were arrested after a clash between about 400 anti-nuclear demonstrators and police in which five officers were injured, authorities said Friday.
Baden-Wuerttemberg state Police Chief Hans-Peter Sturm said the incident took place as Defense Minister Manfred Woerner and the U.S. undersecretary of the Army, James R. Ambrose, neared the end of a visit to nearby Heilbronn.
Sturm said demonstrators tried to prevent Woerner and Ambrose from leaving the town hall late last week.
The two officials used another exit and avoided the protesters, he said.
Woerner and Ambrose went to Heilbronn to speak to local officials about a Pershing 2 missile fire at a U.S. base outside the town that killed three American soldiers and injured 16 on Jan. 11.
