A proposed $168.3-million Los Angeles Fire Department budget for the next fiscal year, representing a 5% increase over the current spending plan, was approved by the city Fire Commission and sent to the City Council. The proposed budget calls for 67 new employees--including 7 firefighters and 48 civilian ambulance personnel, most of whom would replace firefighters. Also included is a new helicopter, 7 new fire engines, 11 ambulances and a ladder truck. The plan would also provide $1 million for a computerized personnel system to quickly locate and deploy personnel.
