GOP Resumes Delay Tactics in Dispute Over Congress Seat

United Press International

House Democratic leader Jim Wright appealed to Republicans today to “accept the verdict of the majority” in a disputed congressional recount, but the GOP renewed its stalling tactics.

As soon as the House convened, Republicans unsuccessfully tried to force it to adjourn--a continuation of the tactics that tied up the House last week. The GOP, saying it was cheated in a House-run recount, wants a special election in the 8th Congressiongal District in Indiana.

Wright told reporters that the harsh language and threats of disruptions are “an embarrassment” to the Republican Party.

A vote is scheduled Tuesday on the GOP request for a special election. On Wednesday, there would be a vote whether to seat Democrat Frank McCloskey, declared the winner by four votes. State officials twice said Republican Rick McIntyre won.
