Gannett Chairman Allan H. Neuharth denied that his newspaper group is involved in takeover negotiations with CBS or Cable News Network and dismissed the current “media merger mania” as speculation fanned by traders looking for a quick kill. Speaking to Gannett publishers gathered for the annual convention in Miami Beach of the American Newspaper Publishers Assn., which opens today, Neuharth said, “There are no serious discussions or negotiations about any big deal going on at this time between Gannett and anyone else.” Gannett is the nation’s largest newspaper company, with 85 dailies. It operates 16 broadcasting stations also.
