Hovland-Dodd Team Advances to Semifinals of Volleyball Open

The top-seeded team of Tim Hovland and Mike Dodd won three matches Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the Orange County Beach Volleyball Open before a crowd of 5,000 at Seal Beach.
Hovland and Dodd defeated Tim Walmer and Kevin Cleary in a quarterfinal match, 15-10, to advance to this morning’s 9 o’clock semifinal match against the fourth-seeded team of Andy Fishburn and Jay Hanset, who defeated Wally Goodrick and Scott Firedchenen in quarterfinal play, 15-13.
In the other semifinal match, sixth-seeded Scott Ayakatubby and Brent Frohoff will play the second-seeded team of Singin Smith and Randy Stoklos. In quarterfinal play, Ayakatubby and Frohoff defeated defending Orange County Open champions John Hanley and Jon Stevenson, 16-14, while Smith and Stoklos defeated Andrew Smith and Mark Eller, 15-10.
The championship match of the two-day, double-elimination tournament is scheduled for this afternoon at 3 o’clock. The winning team will get $4,500.
