U.S. to Tunis: No Inkling of Raid

TUNIS, Tunisia — U.S. envoy John Whitehead sought to convince skeptical Tunisian leaders today that Washington had no advance knowledge of Israel’s Oct. 1 air raid on the Palestine Liberation Organization headquarters near Tunis and that it wants to maintain good relations with the North African nation.
But the Tunisians called for “tangible proof” of American sincerity, an official said after the meeting. Whitehead, a deputy secretary of state, met in Carthage with President Habib Bourguiba, Prime Minister Mohammed Mzali and Foreign Minister Beji Caid Essebsi.
