WCAC Roundup : White, Frederick Lead Pepperdine to Victory

Forwards Eric White and Anthony Frederick led the scoring as Pepperdine bounced back from its first West Coast Athletic Conference loss to trounce St. Mary’s, 88-67, Saturday night at Moraga, Calif.

White scored 20 points, Frederick added 18, and center Levy Middlebrooks, the third starter in Pepperdine’s front line, scored 14. The Waves, who were beaten by the University of San Diego Thursday night to drop out of first place in the WCAC, made their conference record 5-1 and their overall record 17-4.

The Gaels, 2-3 in the WCAC and 9-10 for all games, were led by freshman forward Robert Haugen. He had 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Haugen, college basketball’s national leader in field-goal percentage, made eight of nine shots. The Gaels played their second straight game without top scorer Paul Robertson, out with the flu.

Gonzaga 97, USF 59--Gonzaga reserve forward Roger Bock scored a game-high 17 points at Spokane, Wash., as the Bulldogs handed the cold-shooting Dons their fifth straight loss.

The 38-point victory margin was the largest ever by a Gonzaga team in league play.

Gonzaga improved to 3-3 in the conference and 10-9 overall. San Francisco fell to 1-5 and 6-14.

Portland 69, Santa Clara 54-- Senior Fred Harris scored a career-high 29 points Saturday night to lead the Pilots at Portland.

The Pilots are 2-4 in the conference and 11-9 overall. Santa Clara fell to 1-5 and 6-14.
