Compton : Webb Named Police Chief
Cmdr. Ivory J. Webb has been appointed chief of police by City Manager Laverta S. Montgomery. The 23-year veteran won the job over seven other applicants, including acting Chief Gilbert Sandoval, who had been recommended for the post by recently retired Chief James Carrington. Sandoval immediately announced his retirement and left to join a private security firm, according to officials.
Webb, 47, was graduated from Centennial High School in Compton and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology from California State University, Long Beach, where he is also a candidate for a master’s degree.
Joining the Police Department as a patrol officer in 1963, Webb rose through the ranks, becoming a commander in 1983. Until his appointment Friday, he directed the field services bureau, which includes the patrol, traffic and communications sections of the 140-officer department.
