Margaret Shedd; Berkeley Short Story Author, Novelist

Margaret Shedd, whose short stories appeared in many national publications, died at her Berkeley home last Sunday. She was 87.

Her most recent novel, “A Silence in Bilbao,” was published in 1974. It dealt with the Basque struggles in Franco’s Spain. Her work was anthologized in “O. Henry Best Short Stories” and also appeared in such publications as The New Yorker, Harper’s, Collier’s and Encounter.

Miss Shedd, a widow who was long interested in Latin America, lived off and on in Mexico for more than 20 years. In 1951 she founded the Centro Mexicano de Escritores, which provides scholarships for Mexican and U.S. authors.
