Prep Baseball : Westminster Beats Edison in Sunset League Opener

Westminster High School scored two unearned runs with two out in the fifth inning Friday and held on to defeat Edison, 2-0, in the Sunset League opener for both at Westminster.
John Gonzales (4-0) pitched a one-hitter for the Lions (5-1). Mike Tunstall (2-2) allowed only four hits for the Chargers (6-3), who were ranked No. 6 in this week’s Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn. poll.
In other Sunset League action:
Ocean View 5, Fountain Valley 5 (7 innings, darkness)--Jim Doyle doubled in a run to put Fountain Valley (4-2-1) ahead, 5-4, in the bottom of the fourth but Ocean View (3-1-1) came back to tie it in the sixth on an RBI single by Jim Van Patten.
In Freeway League action:
Sonora 5, Troy 1--Winning pitcher David Bird (2-0) struck out 12 and allowed four hits in a league opener at Sonora. Sonora is 5-1 overall, Troy is 2-3.
In Garden Grove League action:
Garden Grove 4, Santiago 3--Winning pitcher Jeff Kanegae (1-1) struck out 13 and allowed only two hits for the Argonauts (2-1, 1-0). Jerry Canada’s single drove in John Weber in the sixth inning with the winning run.
Bolsa Grande 2, Los Amigos 0-Tony Beall allowed three hits and struck out eight in shutting out the Lobos. The Matadors are 3-2 overall.
Rancho Alamitos 3, La Quinta 1--The Vaqueros (1-0, 2-2) scored three runs in the second inning thanks in part to two errors and held on to win at La Quinta. The Aztecs are 0-1 and 2-4.
In Orange League action:
Anaheim 5, Brea-Olinda 4--The Colonists scored five runs in the third inning and won at Anaheim.
In Oceanside Tournament action:
Laguna Hills 7, Carlsbad 3--First baseman Wayne Helm tied the score at 3-3 with a two-run home run in the fifth for the Hawks and freshman Rob Milow’s two-run single in the sixth keyed a four-run sixth inning and gave Laguna Hills the lead.
Jay Christensen (1-1) pitched a complete game and earned the win. He allowed five hits and struck out five.
In Palos Verde Tournament action:
Loara 4, Downey 1--Brian Roberts’ three-run home run in the fifth inning led the Saxons to the first-round victory. Jeff Paterson (2-0) pitched a complete game and earned the win for Loara (6-1).
In nonleague action:
El Toro 5, University 0--Left-hander Richard Faulks pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 to lead the Chargers at El Toro. Faulks has allowed only three earned runs in 25 innings, giving him an earned-run average of 0.84.
Esperanza 3, Canyon 2--Tom Redington and Larry Nicks homered to lead the Aztecs (6-1) past the Comanches (2-2-1) at Esperanza.
Laguna Beach 10-1, Santa Ana Valley 0-5--Coby Naess threw a one-hitter for the Artists (3-2) in the first game. Brian Dunn led the Falcons (4-3) in the nightcap with two RBIs.
Newport Christian 14, Chadwick 3--The Conquerors (1-2) were led on offense by John Seneken who went 3 for 3, with three RBIs and two runs scored in the win over the Dolphins at Chadwick. Jeff Kauffman was the winner for Newport Christian, pitching 4 innings. He gave up two hits and had eight strikeouts.
