The movies have had such sport with “Frankenstein” over the years that hearing Julie Harris’ intensely dramatic reading of the Mary Shelley text is like discovering the story all over again. Its underlying message--that man’s fateful efforts to unleash the secrets of science can bring tragic consequences--seems peculiarly timely, or timeless. Harris conveys all the poignant despair in the short, brutish life of the monster the young Victor Frankenstein creates.
