Optics Program

The only state-accredited optics program in Southern California is the program at Los Angeles Community College. The board of trustees has voted to cancel this highly successful program, a move that will leave most students unable to continue their education in optics, and will adversely affect the future eye care of Southern California.

One student commented, “There is no place to transfer to. Ending this program ends my hopes.” This is a particularly ironic action to occur in an era where government officials keep urging people to pull themselves up by their own efforts. The board of trustees has just cut those boot straps.

The program has existed since 1949. It would be prohibitively expensive to reactivate the program at a later date. I urge the citizens of California to protest this irresponsible action. Future eye care depends on it.
