Liberals and McCarthyism

If it’s fair to accuse pots of calling kettles black, should the kettle feel privileged to escape the same censure?
In writing “Many Liberals Mirror McCarthy Himself” did Norman Podhoretz deliberately attempt to mirror McCarthy himself ? In the annual imitation McCarthy innuendo contest, Podhoretz should take a prize.
If the Reagan-Buchanan view is “self-evidently accurate” and if opposing aid to the contras is “inevitably and inescapably to side with the communists,” then thoughtful analysis of pros and cons is a waste of time, and name-calling should muzzle dissent.
What should we call Podhoretz’ last refuge?
