The Cal State Fullerton baseball program must forfeit all of its 1985 victories and has been placed on probation for one year for violations related to improper financial aid given to several team members.
Fullerton’s eligibility for the 1986 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball championship was not affected by the action, said Lewis A. Cryer, PCAA commissioner, in the announcement.
In addition to the forfeitures and probation, which runs through March 1987, Fullerton will be limited to 10 athletic grants-in-aid for the 1986-87 academic year and Titan head Coach Augie Garrido will be issued a public reprimand for his role in the violations.
Schools are usually allowed up to 13 grants-in-aid.
Through information volunteered by the university, it was determined by the PCAA’s Conference Compliance Committee that Garrido had provided from personal funds the housing expenses for nine members of the Titans’ 1985 squad. Garrido’s actions violated NCAA policy and circumvented the university’s procedure for awarding financial aid.
