Gunmen shot to death a Communist member of the Colombian Senate in the second such assassination in three days. Sen. Pedro Nel Jimenez Obanda of the guerrilla-backed Patriotic Union Party was slain by two gunmen on a motorcycle in the town of Villavicencio, about 60 miles southeast of Bogota. On Saturday, a member of the same party, a lawmaker in the lower house of the Colombian Congress, was killed in a similar manner. President Virgilio Barco Vargas was quoted as saying the murders are aimed at sabotaging his attempts to make peace with the guerrillas.
