The Chilkoot Trail

The writer answers:
Kudos to the alert Alaska and railroad buffs for picking up on the fact that the White Pass & Yukon Route has suspended service from Skagway to Whitehorse. That and other information about the highway was omitted from the article, which was about backpacking the old Chilkoot Trail, and which is still available for anyone hardy enough to trace the entire “32 meanest miles” of the gold rush miners. I did use the word “railroad” because I felt that the word “route” might confuse the reader with the Chilkoot Trail, about which I was writing.
While I did not say so, I did enjoy the brief ride on the old narrow-gauge railway, and I agree in lamenting its suspension. LADISLAW REDAY
