Fires Set to Clear South County Canyon of Brush
- Share via
Smoke that was visible over much of southern Orange County Wednesday came from fires that were intentionally set to clear 900 acres of dense brush in the backcountry, according to the Orange County Fire Department.
Blazes were touched off about 9:30 a.m. in Gabino Canyon, near Ortega Highway about 12 miles east of San Juan Capistrano. Fire crews from the county, the U.S. Forest Service and the California Division of Forestry stood by until the prescribed burn was completed about 4 p.m.
