A 30-year-old Santa Ana man who was hit by a train was listed in serious condition Sunday at Western Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Elias D. Ruiz and three or four others were sitting on the railroad tracks drinking beer near the 400 block of East 17th Street on Saturday afternoon when a northbound train approached, police Lt. Robert Helton said.
The train blew its whistle several times and the others left the track. Ruiz was hit, suffering head cuts and bruises. Police do not know how much alcohol the man had consumed, Helton said.
“He was getting away but not fast enough,” Helton said. “I don’t think he realized you can’t stop trains real quick.”
