NMR Reports Receiving $2 Million in 2 Lawsuits

NMR Centers Inc., a Newport Beach-based operator of diagnostic imaging centers, said it has received about $2 million in settling two lawsuits it had filed against the firms that supplied equipment and facilities for an NMR center in Urbana, Ill.

NMR also said it will not resume its outpatient imaging operations in Urbana. Increasing competition has reduced the opportunity the company once had there, said S. Lewis Meyer, NMR’s president.

The lawsuits claimed that Technicare Corp. in Solon, Ohio, failed to provide equipment that worked properly and that University Park Imaging Corp. in Urbana improperly designed and constructed the facility to house NMR’s operation in Urbana.

NMR uses magnetic resonance to produce images that are similar to X-rays but do not expose patients to the radiation used in X-rays. Excluding the defunct Urbana facility, NMR has three outpatient clinics, including one in Whittier, and has plans to build six more, including one in Brea.
