Rejection of Rose Bird

The returns are in and Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird lost. So did the people of California.
I hope she can derive some comfort from the fact that she conducted herself and leaving her office with dignity and honor. In a campaign noted for its destructive and negative posture she stood out like a beacon to sanity. Like many before her who have had principles and courage, she paid the price.
Many candidates, sensing an irritable and bloodthirsty public, with indecent haste, made her the focal point of their campaigns, asking us to determine their opponent’s fitness for office by his or her support or lack of support for her even when that office was not even remotely connected with the administration of criminal justice.
