Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, visiting Chicago for talks with Jewish leaders, denied that Israel has produced nuclear weapons. “Israel does not intend to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East,” Peres said. He commented in response to questions about the arrest of Mordechai Vanunu, 31, a nuclear technician who told a British newspaper that Israel has been producing nuclear warheads for 20 years at a secret reactor at Dimona. Peres said that even though Vanunu’s information wasn’t true, he should still be prosecuted because “he does not have the right” to discuss such issues and thus “violated the law.”
