The World : U.N. Asks S. Africa Curbs

A large majority of U.N. members approved a resolution calling on the Security Council to adopt comprehensive, mandatory sanctions against South Africa. The resolution, which received 126 affirmative votes in the General Assembly to 16 against with 13 abstentions, also urged the United States and Britain, which have vetoed several sanctions attempts, and other opponents to reassess their positions. There is no power of veto in the 159-nation General Assembly, but only the Security Council is authorized to adopt enforcement measures such as sanctions.
