Two candidates for sheriff in Greenville, Ill., who tied in last week’s election, with 2,192 votes apiece, decided the outcome by flipping a coin. But the loser said he will seek a recount. Bond County Sheriff Bill Willeford, a Democrat who has held the job for 16 years, won the coin flip with tails. The tie-breaking event was witnessed by about 200 people jammed into the Bond County Courthouse. Willeford defeated Republican challenger William Gribble. Under Illinois law, tie votes in county elections are settled by lot, said Eldon Roe, county clerk.
