A Laguna Hills man was killed and his wife injured Saturday morning when their car collided with a van driven by an off-duty Long Beach police officer on Irvine Center Drive.
The victim was identified by Irvine police as 29-year-old Scot Lavere Essenmacher.
The accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. when the off-duty officer, Gilbert Quinonez, tried to make a left or U-turn as he was traveling southbound on Irvine Center Drive near the 405 Freeway. Essenmacher’s Corvette, going north on that street, collided with Quinonez’s van, Sgt. Scott Cade said.
Essenmacher died at Mission Community Hospital. His wife, Denise, 25, was in serious condition. Quinonez, 48, of Huntington Beach suffered a broken wrist.
