Promoters of the Sun City golf tournament in Bophuthatswana, South Africa, said they will offer a winner-take-all first prize of $1 million this year to overcome anti-apartheid pressures threatening the event.
The tournament began in 1981 at Sun City, the sports and casino resort developed by Sol Kerzner in Bophuthatswana, one of the four black homelands declared independent by South Africa but unrecognized by any other country. The total prize was $1 million, at that time the biggest in the world.
There will be no second- or third-place money, but bonuses for as much as $50,000 will be given for the low round each day.
Top international golfers have competed at Sun City but, over the years, campaigners against South Africa’s apartheid system persuaded some players to withdraw.
