Sri Lanka Clashes Kill 6 Rebels and 1 Soldier

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Six Tamil guerrillas and a soldier were killed Friday in fresh fighting in Sri Lanka’s northern Jaffna Peninsula as India attempted to revive talks for a peaceful solution of the ethnic conflict.
The guerrillas are fighting government troops in the north and east to set up an independent homeland for minority Tamils who form 12.6% of the island’s 15 million people, mostly Sinhalese.
