Amy Carter took the witness stand in Northampton, Mass., and quietly defended her participation in an anti-CIA protest as something she “had to do” to spotlight a greater crime of illegal CIA activities. Abbie Hoffman, 50, the 1960s anti-war leader, is also on trial with Carter and 13 others in the Nov. 24 demonstration at the University of Massachusetts. Carter, 19, the daughter of former President Jimmy Carter, is a sophomore at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
