WASHINGTON — The Energy Department said today it has tentatively set 2007 as the target date for selecting the site of a permanent nuclear waste repository in the eastern part of the country.
It was the first specific date for choosing the eastern waste site since Energy Secretary John S. Herrington announced last May that a search for the site was being postponed indefinitely because a first repository in the West--to be placed in Hanford, Wash.; Yucca Mountain, Nev., or Deaf Smith County, Tex.--would be able to handle all of the nation’s commercial nuclear waste through 2020.
