“Between the Lines.” Janis Ian. Columbia. There’s a tendency in the record industry to look back on albums that once enjoyed major critical or commercial success as “overrated” if the artist’s subsequent work didn’t maintain that momentum. That’s probably why this 1975 best seller has been included in CBS’ CD budget series. But this graceful, deeply introspective, folk-flavored collection is far more affecting than most full-priced CDs. The songs--highlighted by “At Seventeen” and “Watercolors”--frequently deal with rallying against insecurities and rejection. Sound quality: good. *** 1/2
Both of these albums are part of Columbia Records’ “Collector’s Choice,” a CD budget series that is being discounted to $9.99 at some stores.
