RTD Board Rejects 90 Fare

From United Press International

The Southern California Rapid Transit District board of directors today rejected a proposal to raise the basic bus fare, now at 85 cents, to 90 cents.

The RTD’s action leaves open the question of how a $25-million deficit projected for next year will be erased. Raising bus fares and the price of special passes would have brought the beleaguered district $9.5 million. State law requires the RTD to adopt a balanced budget. The board can still vote to raise fares before July 1, which is when General Manager John Dyer’s original proposal to increase fares would have taken effect.
