High winds and mounting seas spawned by a Memorial Day storm trapped more than 150 boats belonging to visitors in Avalon Harbor on Santa Catalina Island. The harbor master’s office said more than half of his 375 moorings were still occupied by the sailboats and motorboats belonging to Memorial Day weekend visitors who were discouraged from attempting the 26-mile crossing to the mainland by a storm generating choppy seas and winds gusting to 25 m.p.h. Harbor Patrol spokeswoman Mary Salisbury said most of the visitors left their boats behind and returned on larger commercial craft. “They will just come back and get their boats next week,” she said.
