Stanford Wins on Grand Slam in 10th, 6-5

OMAHA — Freshman Paul Carey hit a one-out grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday, lifting Stanford to a 6-5 victory that eliminated Louisiana State from the College World Series.

Craig Faulkner’s three-run double with two out in the top of the 10th had given LSU a 5-2 lead. But two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases and Carey, who was 2 for 13 in the tournament, hit an opposite-field homer to left on a 1-1 pitch from freshman Ben McDonald (2-3).

Second-rated Stanford (51-17) will play the winner of Friday night’s Oklahoma State-Texas game Saturday. Stanford, 3-1 in the double-elimination tournament, must win two more games for the national championship.

No. 7 LSU finished (49-19).

Stanford’s winning rally began with one out when Barry Manuel walked Ruben Armaro and Toi Cook. McDonald, LSU’s fourth pitcher, entered the game and hit Ed Sprague with a pitch to bring up Carey, who hit his 12th home run.

Stanford’s Steve Chitren (8-3) pitched two-thirds of an inning and earned the victory despite allowing Faulkner’s two-out double. It followed a single by Rob Hartwig and walks to Andy Galy and Dave Cunningham.
