The Los Angeles County Claims Board agreed to pay $25,000 in compensation to a man who said he spent 97 more days in jail than his sentence required. A report to the board said officials still don’t know whether it was computer or human clerical error that caused Jorge Horacio Campos to stay in jail for an extra stretch that was more than double his original sentence. Campos was arrested for drunk driving in 1986 and sentenced to 43 days in jail for a probation violation. But somehow he wasn’t released 43 days later. A Claims Board report says officials don’t know why he wasn’t freed. Asked if Campos protested to jail guards that he was being held too long, Claims Board Chairman Henry Bachrach replied: “Yes, but people . . . start yelling that as soon as they are incarcerated.”
