A leader in vinyl and cassette “oldies” collections, Original Sound only slightly stretches the truth in the title of this 55-minute CD package (a cassette version is due shortly): Seven of the hits, including Jerry Butler’s “He Will Break Your Heart,” reached No. 1 only on the R&B; charts, not the pop charts. As with most oldies samplers, the sound quality is very uneven and the song selection (Frankie Avalon’s “Venus” to Al Wilson’s “Show and Tell”) is arbitrary rather than thematic. However, these are the original hits, not the rerecorded versions that pop up on some CDs. **
