Wilmington : Halfway House Canceled

Federal officials have canceled a contract with a private company to operate a halfway house for federal prisoners in Wilmington, largely because of community opposition to the proposed facility.
The contract with Behavioral Systems Southwest called for a halfway house for 35 prisoners on East Anaheim Street. The cancellation was announced in a letter to Rep. Glenn M. Anderson (D-San Pedro) from Jerry Williford, regional director for the federal Bureau of Prisons.
A spokesman for Behavioral Systems said last month that the government was canceling the agreement, but the letter from Williford was the first confirmation from the Bureau of Prisons.
The bureau will now seek new bids for the contract. Anderson promised Wilmington residents in a statement released by his office that the new bids will not involve Wilmington.
“I am very happy to be able to assure the people of Wilmington that no halfway probation house will be placed there,” he said.
