King May Have Used His Wits, Not Blundered

The blunder (King’s Blunder Names Ship, May 17) was Sir Percy Gates’, not King George V’s. Had Sir Percy been direct and less obsequious, he could have given the king the opportunity to choose from several possible meanings. By his wits or not, the king won in the deal; one can assume he knew the naming practice of Cunard Lines.
I don’t know how the king felt about his grandmother, but he got an easy chance to one-up her, in favor of his wife, and he did not have to declare himself.
