Mark Wirt, a motorcycle racer from Simi Valley, died of injuries Sunday after crashing during an American Federation of Motorcycles race at Willow Springs Raceway, near Rosamond.
Wirt, 28, apparently missed a turn during a novice-class race and suffered multiple fractures and chest injuries in the accident. He died en route to Antelope Valley Hospital.
It was the second racing fatality at Willow Springs this year. Marty Spiegel, of Redondo Beach, one of the AFM’s leading riders, was killed in a three-cycle pileup May 17.
