Tennis Roundup : Sundstrom Has Surprise for Top-Seeded Leconte

Henryk Sundstrom of Sweden upset top-seeded Henri Leconte of France, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, Tuesday at the $225,000 Swiss Open at Gstaad, Switzerland.
Sundstrom, ranked 115th in the world to No. 12 for Leconte, started slowly. The Swede took control in the second and third sets of the two-hour match, which was interrupted briefly by rain.
Another seeded player eliminated was No. 7 Ramesh Krishnan of India, who lost to Haiti’s Ronald Agenor, 3-6, 3-6.
Third-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain overpowered South African-born American Johan Kriek, 6-1, 6-4.
In other matches, Anders Jarryd of Sweden ousted Roland Stadler of Switzerland, 6-3, 6-4, and Mikael Pernfors, also of Sweden, beat Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 6-2, 6-4.
Unseeded Sammy Giammalva surprised second-seeded Scott Davis, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the $100,000 Hall of Fame Tennis Championships at Newport, R.I.
In another first-round match, defending champion and No. 8-seeded Bill Scanlon was beaten by qualifier Marc Flur of Durham, N.C., 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 5 seeded Robert Seguso, who teamed with Ken Flach to win the Wimbledon men’s doubles title last week, lost to John Fitzgerald of Australia, 6-1, 6-1.
Third-seeded Kent Carlsson of Sweden downed Jimmy Brown, 6-4, 6-3, in a second-round match at the $293,400 U.S. Pro Tennis Championships at Brookline, Mass., where five seeded players have been beaten in the first two days.
In second-day upsets, Tom Nijssen of the Netherlands beat off No. 8-seeded Tarik Benhabiles of Algeria, 6-3, 7-5, and Andrew Castle of Great Britain eliminated No. 12 Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina, 7-6, 6-2.
