Wilmington : Cemetery Tax Considered

The board of the Wilmington Cemetery District has set a public hearing Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. at Banning Recreation Center to discuss a special assessment of Wilmington property owners. The measure is intended to solve financial problems that led to closure of the historic cemetery in June.
If approved by the board, the assessment, expected to be $7 a year for each parcel, would appear on November tax bills. About 10,000 parcels would be affected.
A $36,000 temporary bailout from the City of Los Angeles, recommended by the City Council finance committee, will be voted on by the full council Tuesday, according to Wilmington-area Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores, who proposed the loan. After the money is received, the board plans to reopen the cemetery, which is now open only on Sundays.
